Some schools have an art class. We have eight art majors.

At Northwest School of the Arts, students do not just study the arts. They live them. They perform them. They wear them. They record them. They plate them. They publish them.

Every scholar picks a lane and goes all in, backed by teachers who see the gift before the world does. And every 8th grader closes out middle school in New York City, on Broadway.

WARM EXPECTATIONS. RELENTLESS SUPPORT. ZERO EXCUSES.

Vocal Music

“If you have ever sung into a hairbrush, this is your sign.”

In Vocal Music, scholars train like real artists. Class starts with breath work and warm ups that build power, range, and control, then moves into sight reading, harmony parts, and blending in ensemble. Students learn gospel, classical, pop, R&B, and musical theater repertoire, then take it to the stage in showcases, concerts, and community performances. By the end of the year, they are not just singing. They are performing with technique, confidence, and stage presence that turns heads.

YOU WILL: train your voice, learn to read music, sing in parts, and command a live audience.

Digital Arts

“Turn your screen time into a skill set.”

Digital Arts scholars build the visuals that the world scrolls past every single day, except theirs stop the scroll. Students work in graphic design, digital illustration, photo editing, animation, and video production, learning layout, color theory, typography, and storytelling through a lens. Class projects include logo design, poster campaigns, short films, motion graphics, and digital portfolios students actually keep. This is where imagination meets technology and becomes a career pathway.

YOU WILL: design, illustrate, edit, animate, film, and build a portfolio that follows you for life.

Visual Arts

“Blank canvas. Loud voice.”

Visual Arts is hands on from the first bell. Scholars work across drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, and mixed media while studying the artists and movements that changed history. Students learn line, value, perspective, composition, and color mixing, then push into original work that says something about who they are. Finished pieces go up in school galleries, community exhibits, and our Minds and Masterpieces celebrations where families come to see the work.

YOU WILL: sketch, paint, sculpt, print, critique, and exhibit real work in a real gallery setting.

Band

“Pick up the instrument. Change the whole room.”

Band scholars learn an instrument from the ground up, from first note to full ensemble. Class covers tone production, rhythm reading, scales, dynamics, and sectionals where students master their part before the whole band locks in together. Musicians explore concert repertoire, jazz, marching styles, and contemporary arrangements, then bring it all to pep rallies, concerts, and community events. There is nothing like the moment a young musician hears the sound the group makes together.

YOU WILL: master an instrument, read music fluently, rehearse in sections, and perform live.

Theater and Creative Writing

“Write the story. Then step into it.”

This major builds storytellers who can put it on the page and then put it on the stage. In creative writing, scholars draft poetry, short fiction, spoken word, monologues, and original scripts, then workshop their pieces with real feedback and revision. In theater, they train in voice and diction, movement, improvisation, character development, and blocking, and take on scenes and full productions in our Performing Arts Center. Our scholars have already brought Annie to the stage, full cast, full score, full house, and that was only the opening act. Students leave able to speak with power in front of any room, which is a skill that pays off far beyond the theater.

YOU WILL: write, revise, perform, improvise, memorize, and take a bow under real stage lights.

Culinary Arts

“Where homework smells amazing.”

Culinary Arts scholars work in a real kitchen with real technique. Students learn knife skills, kitchen safety and sanitation, measurement and conversions, flavor building, baking fundamentals, and how to read and execute a recipe with precision. Class moves from basic prep to full dishes, plating and presentation, food cost awareness, and the teamwork of running a kitchen line. They also cater and serve at school events, which means the whole village gets to taste the results.

YOU WILL: prep, cook, bake, plate, serve, and learn the discipline behind every great meal.

Fashion

“Design it. Sew it. Wear it. Own it.”

Fashion scholars turn ideas into garments they can hold in their hands. Students learn sketching and croquis illustration, color and fabric selection, measuring, pattern basics, hand sewing, machine sewing, and construction from first stitch to finished piece. Along the way they study trend, culture, and the designers who built the industry, then develop their own signature style and collection concepts. The year builds toward a runway showcase where their work walks in front of an audience.

YOU WILL: sketch designs, choose fabrics, run a sewing machine, construct garments, and hit the runway.

Music Production

“The next hit is sitting in your head. Let us help you get it out.”

Music Production scholars learn to build a song from nothing. Students work with digital audio workstations to program drums, layer melodies, build basslines, and arrange full tracks, while learning beat structure, tempo, key, and song form. Class also covers microphone technique, recording vocals, editing takes, mixing levels, and basic mastering so tracks sound clean and professional. Producers here do not just make beats. They score films, back live performances, and release finished projects with their name on them.

YOU WILL: produce beats, record vocals, mix, master, and walk away with finished tracks.

“Start in kindergarten. Finish on Broadway.”

Every year, our 8th grade class travels to New York City. This is not a sightseeing trip. It is the capstone of everything they have trained for.

Scholars walk the Fashion District, the blocks where American fashion is designed, sourced, and sent into the world. Our Fashion students spend the year sketching, selecting fabric, and constructing garments. In New York, they see the industry those skills belong to, up close and full size.

Then they take their seats for a Broadway show. Recent classes have seen MJ, Wicked, and The Lion King, watching professionals do at the highest level exactly what our scholars rehearse every week: the vocals, the staging, the lighting, the design, the live band, the storytelling.

Students come home changed. Not because they saw New York, but because they saw themselves in it.

Eight majors. One village. And a graduating class that has stood in the middle of Times Square knowing they belong there.
