About our school

Ohio's state report card rated Northwest School of the Arts 4 Stars overall in 2024-25 — placing it in the top 10 percent of charter schools statewide. The school also recorded more than a ten percent increase in its Performance Index and earned 5 Stars in Gap Closing, meaning it moves every kind of learner forward, not just the ones who were already ahead. NWSOTA serves students in kindergarten (early entry) through eighth grade in Cleveland, Ohio.
The arts are not scheduled at the end of the day after the "real" learning is done. They are the method. A history unit becomes a performance. A science concept becomes a visual project. Students learn to think through making, and their creative confidence and academic progress build together. That is why NWSOTA earns 4-Star ratings in both Progress and Early Literacy: visual art, music, theater, and movement are how learning happens here.
That's what high expectations look like here — not pressure for its own sake, but a genuine belief that a student's creative voice is an academic strength, one that deserves serious development. Every student is expected to grow, and the school is built around the idea that compassion and rigor aren't in competition.
It's a publicly funded school. There's no tuition, no fees, and no cost to families.
- Free breakfast and lunch for every student.
- Free transportation for eligible families.
- No uniforms required.

Community School
Northwest School of the Arts is a public charter school. We are our own school district sponsored by the Ohio Council of Community Schools (OCCS) which provides oversight and enforces academic, fiscal, and legal accountability. We are managed by ACCEL Schools, a high performing network of over 80 charter schools located throughout the United States.
Community Schools (Charter Schools) offer families an alternative to the local public school. Community schools are tuition-free, open to all students in the county, and focused on meeting student needs for success. Community schools are among the top-performing schools in the nation.
